Copyright, Plagiarism, & Publication
1) What is Copyright?
Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States and other countries to the authors of original literary works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works.
Copyright does not protect ideas; regardless of the form in which it is described, explained, or illustrated.
2) How do I copyright my work?
Copyright protection exists from the time the work is created in fixed form. The copyright of an original work immediately becomes the property of the author who created the work. The work has copyright whether published or unpublished.
If a work is prepared over a period of time, the part of the work that is fixed on a particular date constitutes the created work as of that date.
Even though registration of copyright is not a requirement for protection, the copyright law provides several advantages to encourage copyright owners to register. Registration establishes a public record of the copyright claim and before an infringement suit may be filed in court, registration is necessary for works of U. S. origin. Registration may be made at any time within the life of the copyright.

4) How do I keep my work from getting plagiarized?
The sad truth is that there is no way to safe guard your works from plagiarism.
You can however take steps to prevent it and steps to defend against it when it happens.
Fantasy-Writers.org provides a barrier from the regular internet community by requiring that only members can have access to stories. This provides some form of protection.
Authors may also place a declaration of copyright on their posted stories to discourage potential content thieves. Authors can do so by placing “Copyright © Year by Your Name. All Rights Reserved.” This will show that you take your work seriously by declaring copyright and make potential content thieves think twice.
The most extreme step to take against plagiarism is to register your work with the local Copyright Office. This will cost money but will be required if you are planning on taking legal action against the plagiarist.

2) What is the “My Messages” Section?
The Fantasy-Writers.org has a unique feature which is you can send private messages or PMs to other members while logged in. Think of it as intra-site email. The “My Messages” section allows you to read, write, and store PMs as well as keep a list of friends to PM.
When you first log on, if you have new PMs, you will notice a pop up window that will alert you to new PM messages as well as a blinking envelope icon on the top left below that Fantasy-Writers.org banner. You can click on either the pop up window, the envelope, or the “My Messages” link to be taken to your inbox.
New messages will have an unopened envelope icon next to them, read messages have an opened envelope with a note inside next to them, and messages that you have replied to have the same opened envelope with a red arrow pointing back next to them.
The inbox functions much like any other email program. It lists the author of the message, the subject, the date it was sent, and a check box for deletion.
Clicking on the user name of the person who sent you a PM will bring you to a blank PM page to send them a PM. This however does not reply to the message nor does it allow you to read the message before hand.
Clicking on the subject line will take you to the message itself. From here you can skip back to a previous message, delete the current message, or reply to the message. Once a message is deleted the message is irrecoverable.
On the bottom of the inbox you will notice a “Friends List” and an “Ignore List”. Here you can add friends to your “Friends List” to make sending them PM messages faster and easier. Or you can add members to your “Ignore List” to never receive PMs from them.
If you are receiving spam-type messages or harassing messages from any member please send the offensive PM to Elisabeth with a brief explanation of the situation. Spamming or harassing fellow members is strictly prohibited.

3) What is the “My Stories” Section?
The “My Stories” section is for your original written works to be submitted to be displayed on the website and available to other members for peer review and critique.
Here is a quick definition of terms with an example of your “My Stories” page.

The “Title” column lists your story submissions.
You can switch how your stories are sorted by clicking on the (A/D) next to the “Title” column header, the “Author” column header, or the “Date” column header. A is for Ascending and D is for Descending. For example, if I click “D” next to the “Date” column header, my stories will be sorted in descending order according to date. If I click “A” next to the “Title” column header, then my stories will be sorted alphabetically in ascending order. You will notice that after the “My Top 10 Stories” header, it will list how the “My Stories” is currently sorted, example “Sort by Date (ASC)”. That means the stories are sorted by ascending date.
The “Author” column lists the name of the author of the corresponding story. Since this is in the “My Stories” section they author listed will be your member name.
The “Date” column lists the post date that the story as added to “My Stories.” This date will not change even if you modify the story or add more chapters.
The “Hits” column lists the number of times that members have accessed your story; since the number in the example is 15 that means that the story in the example has been viewed 15 times.
The “Actions” column lists the actions that you can do to your story. The first icon, the magnifying glass, is for viewing your work and how it will look to other members. The second icon, the notebook and pen, is for editing your work to fix any mistakes you might have come across. The third icon, the trash can, is for deleting your work. It will ask you a second time if you really want to delete your work, as a precaution against accidental deletion. If you delete your work however, there is no way for Fantasy-Writers.org to recover it.
On the bottom of the “My Top 10 Stories” section you will notice an “Add – Story” link. Click the “Add - Story” link to create a new story to be added to the list.
Since the “My Stories” page only lists the latest 10 stories submitted there is a search bar located below the “My Top 10 Stories” section. This allows you to search by the beginning letter of the story of by keywords. Since it is in the “My stories” section, it will only search your works, not other members.

Fantasy-Writers.org does not post stories with pornographic scenes or scenes glorifying hate crimes. A rating system is in development to help categorize the wide spectrum of stories being posted.
All written works submitted must be formatted clearly and easy to read. You must use HTML tags to format your submitted work. If you have not formatted your work, it will still get validated but it will be difficult for members to read.
Please only submit works that are ready for peer edit, meaning spelling is correct and grammar is correct. The Administrators are not here to be your personal editors. They are there to make sure that content fits within the guidelines for Fantasy-Writers.org.

No, Fantasy-Writers.org is not a proof reading engine. We are a community of writers willing to do critiques for fellow writers. We are not here to be your personal editors. Please do not submit anything that needs to be proof read. Only submit works with near perfect grammar and formatting.
9) What are the HTML tags I should know to format my story submission?
The most basic HTML tag you can use is the paragraph tag. You can place this in front of each new paragraph. This tag you do not need to close, unlike other HTML tags.
The next in line for complexity of use are the format tags for < B > Bold < /B >, < I > Italics < /I >, and < U > Underlined < /U >. These can be very useful to express strong points in your story. Please note that each tag was closed at the point that the author wanted the effect to end. If you do not close the tag, then rest of the document will exhibit which ever tag you set.
Lastly, the < CENTER > tag will center your text on the page. Like the above, you need to close the < /CENTER > tag to end its effect.
If you know more HTML tags you may use them at your discretion. The tags listed here are the basics and intended to help those of you who do not know HTML but wish to format your story well.
