 |
Posted on 9/1/2010 10:25:32 AM by Nyki. - Writing Challenges
This month's challenge comes from a suggestion made ages ago by Goldie (so long, he probably doesn't even remember ). Write a story that ends with a choice to be made, leaving the reader to think about which would be the best choice.
Please read on for the complete rules. Failure to follow the rules will lead to disqualification, whether you read the rules or not.

A day later than usual (to allow for me getting the soaking traditional at all music festivals) here are the results of the July challenge.
1st Place: The Finishing Touch by starbeam Irwig and his brothers have a built a machine and the perfect chance to test it is on the soldiers coming to arrest them. The problem? Irwig is determined to find one perfect acessory that's somewhere in his chamber. 1500 or so words. Light Fantasy after the Challenge, please.
2nd Place: Heavy Duty Report Covers by Fenris Billy the vampire needs some heavy duty report covers. Somewhat based on a true story. Very light fantasy.
3rd Place: Chekov's Chair by silhouette My first mystery story. 6000 words approx. Low fantasy after the contest, please.
Members Choice: Time Stamp by Kukana Coming in at just a smidge over 1000 words this story came to me after my husband told me that after he died he would come back to his own life at the age of 13. He plans to find me when he’s older… which I think is romantic. This is not a Theran Tale… a rare occurrence. Please, Low Fantasy after the challenge.
Congratulations to all the winners.

It seems as if, everywhere I look, I've been hearing about extreme weather lately, whether it's from friends or on the news. So the challenge this month is to write a story in which some kind of extreme weather plays a significant part. It can be any kind of weather you can think of, as long as it's extreme.
Please read on for the complete rules. Failure to follow the rules will lead to disqualification, whether you read the rules or not.

This was a good return to the monthly challenge, with close results and several stories only just missing out on the places. There's also a dead heat for second place - not only did they get identical judges' scores, they also got identical star ratings.
1st Place: I, Meteor by fkurni Just a silly little thing, pardon me. You think meteors are just random asteroids falling from the sky? Well, apparently they’re not. (Hmm... not sure where after the challenge, low fantasy?)
2nd Place: Grave Robbing for Dummies by ryanstothard June challenge story, incorporating all five requested elements, however flimsy they might be. McRoy and Puck seem to have stumbled onto a good thing. An untouched tomb full of treasures is theirs for the taking, but doesn't it all seem too easy? Light fantasy after the challenge, please. 2960 words
2nd Place: Maze by lesliweird The story of a maze, a delay, some animals, death, and so on. Dark fantasy, I guess, after the contest.
Members Choice: Aunt Caroline by Erika A young woman must travel far from home in order to fulfill the final wish of her eccentric Aunt Caroline. (2800 words) Category: Contemporary Fantasy
Congratulations to all the winners.

This month's challenge comes courtesy of a suggestion by Serafyr, though so long ago that she probably doesn't remember (see, I do keep all suggestions made).
The challenge is to write a story where a character goes to great lengths to obtain something seemingly insignificant.
Please read on for the complete rules. Failure to follow the rules will lead to disqualification, whether you read the rules or not.

Yes, the challenge is back, after a lay-off for May. Lots of people have made suggestions for topics, all of which are on the list and may be used, but I want to keep it simple and flexible after recent problems.
The challenge is to write a story (whatever you like, as long as it has some fantasy element) containing the following elements:
A far-off place A frustrating delay A maze An unusual animal Someone who isn't really dead.
You can interpret these any way you want, but all five must be present and be important to the story.
Please read on for the complete rules. Failure to follow the rules will lead to disqualification, whether you read the rules or not.

This month's challenge only had three entries, so there's no members choice this time.
1st Place: Note Taking by Aiara Hoping fervently a few other folks are trying to slip under the deadline here ... Ecca, servant to the Notetaker who specializes in translating foreign languages, finds she has a unique perspective on the dialect of the Islanders. Approximately 4800 words. Low Fantasy after the challenge. (I'm not sure if it fits, but it's a change. )
2nd Place: The Language of Doubt by starbeam A young mage must overcome the dount of others and herself to help the survivors of an earthquake. 2100 + Words Edit: I should probably note that my methd of addressing the challege is a litteesoteric, what I'm going for is how the "language" of doubt and belief can effect us. Also, since I forgot to this when I posted, High Fantasy after the challenge.
3rd Place: Don't take me too seriously by Esayel Fairy Tale after the challenge please.
Congratulations.

Well, the site's finally stable, and the judges have been able to complete their results. So, a little late:
1st Place: The Queen of Tish by Aiara Time traveler mage Ishene and her bodyguard Kemel travel to the legendary island empire of Tish to explore a possible explanation as to why it fell ... and get more than they bargained for. Appr 7000 words. High Fantasy after the challenge.
2nd Place: Blood Mountain: Theran Tales by Kukana How much is it worth to discover yourself? Bex is the rarest of all Therans, born with a violet aura. He searches the world for another like himself. 2090 words Check my siggy for the art link. Low Fantasy after the challenge please.
3rd Place: The Wingless Fae by SyellinaVI Kyna is a wingless fairy of the WInter Fae. She as ambitions of fitting in, of belonging, but a fairy witout wings is a fairy without respect. The passage to earning them is a carefully guarded secret amongst the Fae, once each fairy must discover for themselves. Along with Flynn, she searches for the secret to gaining wings and finally belonging. Kyna and Flynn will be pushed to the edge of morality. How far will they go to belong?
Members Choice: The Mage King's Curse by saveme4arainyday A girl finds her heart's desire and a man becomes his father's son in the magical Shan Dryn province. The skies will pour out punishment on those who seek more than they deserve in a place where every wall is steeped in enchantments that will help a prince become all that he is meant to be. 5,827 words I'm not sure where to place this after the challenge... I guess the best fit would be romantic fantasy??
Congratulations to all the winners.

Posted on 4/1/2010 7:34:01 AM by Nyki. - Writing Challenges
As it's April 1st, I was going to post a challenge to write a story without using words - but it's gone midday here, so April Fools are no longer valid
So, instead, a suggestion made a few months back - write a story in which a conflict arises due to language or dialect differences.
Please read on for the complete rules. Failure to follow the rules will lead to disqualification, whether you read the rules or not.
